Petersburg & Karelia

Eight private days: imperial St. Petersburg and quiet northern nature — Kizhi, Ruskeala and Valaam

8 days · 2-8 people

Day-by-day program

  1. Day 1 — Arrival in St. Petersburg

    transfer 25 km

Meet at Pulkovo with a name sign, at the gate or exit, whatever your arrival time. Private minivan transfer with a comfort kit (water, wipes, chargers, dates); help with SIM/eSIM if needed. Check in to a central 4★ boutique hotel around 14:00 (5★ upgrade on request), with prayer mat and qibla marker prepared. After a short rest, an evening walk on Nevsky Prospekt around 17:00 with time for prayer. Around 19:00 — welcome halal dinner and a practical briefing: the Karelia route, the Lake Ladoga storm backup, flexible day order. Your coordinator checks in by WhatsApp that evening. All timings below are indicative — the tour is private and the day bends to your rhythm.

  2. Day 2 — Hermitage and Neva

walk 5 km, boat 10 km

After a halal breakfast around 08:30, enter the Hermitage privately without queues — entry roughly 09:30–10:00, before the main crowds (~3 hours): the Winter Palace and Italian painting highlights. Pause for prayer, then lunch near Palace Embankment around 13:00. In rain, choose the General Staff Building or the Russian Museum instead. Palace Square is explored at an unhurried pace and can be shortened if you are tired. Around 20:00 — a private Neva cruise with blankets (in season, April–October); if you prefer a longer hotel rest, the cruise moves to a reserve slot. Your coordinator checks in by WhatsApp.

  3. Day 3 — Imperial suburbs and Karelia transfer

transfer 90 km, train 400 km

Around 08:30 — drive to Peterhof for the fountains and Lower Park. Around 12:00 — Tsarskoye Selo: the Catherine Palace and its Amber Room; halal lunch on the road or by the park. Around 19:00 — the Sapsan high-speed train to Petrozavodsk in business class (about five hours); arrival in Petrozavodsk around midnight. Your driver meets you for the transfer to a hotel on Onega Embankment.

  4. Day 4 — Kivach waterfall and kalitki

    road 160 km

Around 09:00 — drive to Kivach Nature Reserve (80 km) to see one of Europe’s largest lowland waterfalls, followed by an easy eco-trail walk. Around 13:00 — lunch of Karelian cooking with a kalitki masterclass (about one hour): rye pastry, filling and tea with a local host — a warm family moment without ceremony. Return via Martial Waters, Russia’s first spa resort founded by Peter the Great; back at the hotel around 18:00. On request, replace extra museum time with a 1–1.5-hour stop in the wooden village of Kinerma.

  5. Day 5 — Ruskeala Mountain Park

    road ~600 km round trip

Leave around 07:30 for Ruskeala (~3–3.5 hours each way), with a short stop at Ahvenkoski waterfalls (~15 min). An option for those who would rather skip the long drive: the retro train “Ruskeala Express” on the Sortavala–Ruskeala leg (1 h 15 min, compartment seats from ~$40 per person one way) — a steam locomotive and carriages in the spirit of the old “Nikolaevsky Express”, while the minivan carries your luggage. Explore the marble canyon, suspension walkways and Italian Quarry; the underground route or a canyon boat is optional. Around 13:00 — a private halal picnic set beside the lake. Back in Petrozavodsk around 20:00. If Lake Ladoga is stormy, Valaam moves to a reserve day and the agreed alternative is Sortavala, waterfront photographs and kalitki tea at the hotel — decided in advance, not on the pier.

  6. Day 6 — Valaam and Ladoga skerries

boat ~100 km, walk 5 km

Leave the hotel around 07:00; the private boat to Valaam departs around 08:00 (~2.5 hours one way): the monastery, sketes and pine trails. Around 13:00 — a halal lunch arranged on the island in advance, with a skerries loop on the way back in calm weather. Return around 19:00. If the Ladoga forecast is stormy, Valaam moves to the reserve day and this day is filled with an enhanced Ruskeala or Sortavala programme — the decision is agreed before departure, not at the last minute. Evening banya on request or time to rest.

  7. Day 7 — Kizhi

boat 70 km, train 400 km

Depart around 08:00 — cross Lake Onega by Meteor hydrofoil to Kizhi Island (~1 h 15 min one way; if you need dedicated seats on the hydrofoil, the benchmark is ~$60 per person round trip — we book in advance). From December to March, while the ice is stable, the Meteor is replaced by a hivus airboat on the same route with comparable travel time. Visit the UNESCO open-air museum of wooden architecture: the 1714 Transfiguration Church with 22 domes built without a single nail, village farmsteads and bell towers. Around 13:00 — a chef-prepared picnic lunch. Return around 16:30, then the evening business-class train to St. Petersburg (roughly 19:00). Farewell dinner follows.

  8. Day 8 — Departure

    transfer 25 km

Breakfast around 08:00, then a private transfer to Pulkovo Airport for your flight — arrive roughly 3 hours before departure. A Karelian birch gift — either a small casket or a handmade cutting board — travels home with you.
